Three thousand quartzite towers rising out of cloud — the most sculptural landscape in China
Tianzi Mountain — Cloud pours between the towers; the peaks burn briefly orange at the rim.
Yuanjiajie — The Hallelujah pillars catch low side-light and separate from the haze.
Tianmen Cave — Heaven's Door glows against a deep blue valley after the last tour buses leave.
Nothing else on earth looks like this: 3,000 vertical sandstone towers, and a cloud layer that sits below them more than 150 days a year.
We plan Zhangjiajie around cloud probability, not convenience. That means sleeping inside the park, being on the Tianzi platforms before the cable car opens, and keeping Tianmen Mountain for the late afternoon when the tour crowds thin out and the cave turns into a silhouette.
The best cloud season; azaleas on the ridge tops.
Frequent sea-of-clouds after rain; hot and hazy at midday.
Stable air, clear peaks, the strongest colour at sunset.
Snow and rime on the towers; the fewest visitors.
