The tallest stationary dunes on earth, with more than a hundred lakes hiding between them
Bilutu peak — Climb the 460 m dune for first light; the ridge line throws a hard shadow across the sand.
Temple Lake — Golden dunes reflecting in saline water beside the 250-year-old temple.
Desert camp — No light pollution for 200 km — the Milky Way sits straight over the dune crest.
Badain Jaran holds the world's tallest stationary dunes — some over 400 m — and more than 100 spring-fed lakes scattered between them.
This is expedition photography. Access is by 4WD convoy across dune fields, camping or a simple desert guesthouse, and the shooting plan moves with the wind because blown sand will end a session faster than any forecast. In return you get the cleanest dune geometry anywhere, lake reflections no one else is shooting, and night skies that need no processing.
Mild days, occasional sandstorms, few visitors.
Hot and hazy, but the lakes are at their fullest.
Stable weather and low wind — the best window.
Very cold, graphic light, and the emptiest dunes.
A single hard shadow edge along 400 m of sand.
Golden dunes doubled in still saline water.
The Milky Way rising over a black dune ridge.
Timings follow the light. Every day is adjusted to the season and the weather.

Everything here runs on 4WD convoys, wind forecasts and water. These are the four things that decide whether a session works.
Entry is by licensed 4WD convoy from Alxa Right Banner — self-drive is not permitted in the dune field.
Morning is usually calmest. Afternoon wind ends most sand work by 16:00.
Blown sand is the real enemy. Rain covers, no lens changes in open wind, sensor cleaning kit.
Nights at a desert guesthouse or camp; carry all drinking water in with the convoy.
Licensed 4WD convoy, wind-aware scheduling, camping logistics and a guide who has crossed this dune field for years.
