Log cabins, birch and larch forest, and a valley that fills with fog every clear autumn morning
Hemu viewing platform — Smoke rises from the cabins into still, cold air as the larch turns gold.
Kanas Lake — The river bends through birch forest; the water runs glacial green in low sun.
Hemu village — Lamplit cabins and the Milky Way over the Altay ridgeline.
For about three weeks a year northern Xinjiang becomes the most photogenic temperate forest in Asia — and almost nobody outside China books it.
Hemu is the reason to come: a Tuva village of log cabins in a valley that fills with ground fog on any calm, cold morning between late September and mid-October. Kanas Lake, Baihaba and the Burqin river terraces fill the rest of the route. We keep two nights at Hemu specifically so a failed fog morning is not a wasted trip.
Melting rivers and wildflowers; the valley reopens.
Green forest, cool nights, reliable fog after rain.
Larch gold and morning fog — the three-week peak.
Snow-bound cabins, extreme cold, almost no visitors.
Vertical smoke in freezing, windless air.
Whole slopes burning yellow at low sun.
Kanas water threading the birch forest.
Timings follow the light. Every day is adjusted to the season and the weather.
Flight north; transfer to Burqin.
