China's most painted mountain

Huangshan has fed Chinese landscape painting for four centuries — granite towers, wind-carved pines and a cloud sea that redraws the mountain every hour.

The mountain rewards the photographers who sleep on top. We stay inside the scenic area so you are standing at Begin-to-Believe Peak before first light, work the West Sea trails through midday haze, and finish at Paiyun Pavilion as the cloud sea turns gold. In winter, the same platforms become a world of snow rime and clear air.

  • West Sea Grand Canyon light
  • Paiyun Pavilion cloud-sea sunset
