Sandstone striped in ochre, vermilion and grey — a landscape that only wakes up when the sun is low
Platform No.4 / No.2 — East-facing ridges glow; the stripes are softest and most saturated after a wet night.
Platform No.1 — The largest amphitheatre turns vermilion in the last thirty minutes.
Platform No.5 — Cool light on the grey bands with the last warmth still on the red.
Danxia is not subtle. Twenty-four million years of iron-rich sandstone, folded and eroded into bands that only reveal their colour in low, warm light.
The single most useful fact about Zhangye: rain makes the colour. Wet rock saturates, dry rock turns chalky, so an afternoon shower before a clear sunset is worth more than a forecast of pure blue. We build in a second evening for that reason, and we pair the park with Binggou's window-shaped grottoes and the cliff temples at Mati for days when the main ridges are flat.
Thaw and wind; fewer visitors and clean afternoon light.
Warm, stormy evenings that produce the best saturated colour.
Stable air, low haze — the most reliable season overall.
Snow dusts the bands for a rare graphic contrast.
Vermilion and ochre after rain at low sun.
Tilted layers running diagonally across frame.
Binggou arches framing the striped hills.
Timings follow the light. Every day is adjusted to the season and the weather.
Transfer west; Dafo Temple and an evening recce.

Two sunsets and a sunrise on the four platforms.
Adds a weather-buffer evening, Binggou and Mati Temple.
Zhangye with Jiayuguan, Dunhuang and the desert.
Each platform faces a different ridge system — going to the wrong one at the wrong hour is the most common mistake here.
The largest amphitheatre. Sunset only — it faces west and flattens at midday.
Folded ridges and the classic sunrise panorama.
The widest, most saturated banded view; the cover shot of Danxia.
Layered abstracts and the quietest platform of the four.
Platform order planned to the sun, a spare evening for the post-rain light, and the grottoes most day-trippers never reach.
