Drum towers, terrace valleys and a sacred peak that rises out of cloud like an island
Jiabang terraces — Mist sits in the valley floor; the terrace ridges step into the light one by one.
Zhaoxing village — Five drum towers light up over the river as the cooking smoke rises.
Zhenyuan old town — Riverside houses double in the water, lanterns warming the balconies.
Guizhou is the least photographed great province in China — Miao and Dong villages still run on festival calendars, not tourism budgets.
The route links the drum-tower villages of the Dong, the hanging rice terraces of Jiabang, the river town of Zhenyuan and the Buddhist summit of Fanjing. Festival dates shift with the lunar year, so we plan Guizhou around the local calendar first and the light second — when the two meet, it is the most rewarding place in the country to photograph people.
