The itinerary, hour by hour

Every day is built around golden hour and blue hour. We shoot early, rest and back-up at midday, and chase the last light every evening.

Day
1
Zhaoxing Dong Village

Arrival & five drum towers at blue hour

We meet at Kaili South high-speed station or Guiyang airport and drive ninety minutes into the hills, to Zhaoxing — the largest Dong village in China and our base for two nights. Check-in is inside the village, a few steps from the drum towers we will be photographing tonight.

Golden hour finds us on the river footbridges with the five drum towers lined up along the water; then the towers light up one by one and the whole valley turns indigo. This is the signature Guizhou frame, and it is far easier after dark than most people expect — the lamps do most of the work.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 15:30  —  Pick-up at Kaili South station / Guiyang airport (1.5 h transfer)
  • 17:30–18:40  —  Golden hour on the river footbridges and covered walkways
  • 18:40–19:50  —  Five drum towers at blue hour (ISO 800–3200, f/1.8–2.8, 1/30–1/60s)
  • 20:00  —  Dinner in the village; gear check

Day
2
Zhaoxing & Tang'an

Terraced village dawn & Dong Grand Song

Twenty minutes on foot up the hill takes us to Tang'an, the terraced Dong village above Zhaoxing, before the first boats of mist burn off. From the ridge the two villages stack in layers with the terraces falling away beneath them — the cleanest wide view in the valley.

Late morning we work the lanes themselves: drying grain, indigo dye vats, and the wooden architecture that the Dong build without nails. In the evening the village often performs the Dong Grand Song — a chance for low-light choral frames and portraits you cannot stage anywhere else.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:50–07:00  —  Tang'an terraces at dawn (ISO 400–800, f/5.6–8, 1/30–1/4s)
  • 08:00–11:00  —  Village lanes, dye vats and stilt-house detail
  • 17:30–18:40  —  Second golden hour on the upper terraces
  • 19:30  —  Dong Grand Song performance — low-light culture frames

Day
3
Jiabang Rice Terraces

Mirror paddies at sunset

A three-hour drive south-west takes us into the Miao and Zhuang highlands of Jiabang, where the terraces run unbroken down the flank of the mountain for more than a kilometre. In the flooding season each paddy becomes a mirror; in autumn the same slopes turn to stacked gold.

We scout the upper road before the light changes so we know exactly where to stand, then drop into the paddies themselves as the sun gets low — reflections of the stilt houses, of the treeline, and of whoever is working the field in front of you.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 08:30  —  Transfer Zhaoxing → Jiabang (3 h, mountain road)
  • 14:00  —  Scout of the upper viewpoints; village portraits on arrival
  • 17:30–19:00  —  Dangniu terrace sunset — mirror paddies and stilt houses (ISO 100–200, f/8–11)
  • 20:00  —  Evening review session

Day
4
Jiabang → Langde

Terrace sunrise & Miao stilt houses

Up before dawn for the terraces one more time, this time from a higher shoulder where the mist still pools in the valley floor. The first twenty minutes give you the layered silver-grey version of the landscape; five minutes later the sun hits the ridge and the whole hillside changes colour.

Mid-morning we drive to Langde, a Miao village of timber stilt houses climbing a steep hillside above a river. Late afternoon is for portrait work with a local host — silver jewellery, embroidered jackets, and the twelve-course welcome that makes Langde famous.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:30–07:00  —  Jiabang terrace sunrise from the upper shoulder (ISO 200, f/8, 1/15–2s)
  • 10:00  —  Transfer Jiabang → Langde (3.5 h)
  • 17:00–18:40  —  Langde stilt houses at golden hour and welcome-ceremony portraits
  • 19:00  —  Village dinner with our host family

Day
5
Kaili → Zhenyuan

Market portraits & river town blue hour

If the day falls on a Sunday we start at the Kaili market, where Miao and Dong women come down from the hills in full dress — the single best portrait opportunity in Guizhou. On other days we photograph the silversmiths and embroidery workshops of the old town instead.

From Kaili we continue north-east to Zhenyuan, an ancient town folded around a horseshoe bend of the Wuyang River. We arrive in time for the last warm light on the riverside houses, then stay for the lanterns and their reflections when the town switches on.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 07:30–10:30  —  Kaili Sunday market or silversmith workshops (portraits, ISO 400–800, f/2.8–4)
  • 11:00  —  Transfer Kaili → Zhenyuan (2 h)
  • 17:30–18:40  —  Golden hour on the river bend and the old city wall
  • 18:40–19:50  —  Zhenyuan blue hour — lanterns doubled in the Wuyang River (10–20s)

Day
6
Fanjingshan

The red-cloud golden summit

An early transfer brings us to Fanjingshan, the sacred Buddhist peak whose two summits rise out of a sea of cloud. The cable car saves two hours of climbing, and the first car of the day is the one you want: it puts you above the cloud before the crowds and before the light hardens.

From the boardwalk we work the Mushroom Stone and the Red Cloud Golden Summit — a pillar split by a vertical crack with a temple on each half. When the cloud pours through the gap the whole mountain appears to be floating, which is exactly what the frames are meant to show.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 06:30  —  Transfer Zhenyuan → Fanjingshan (2.5 h)
  • 09:30  —  First cable car up; Mushroom Stone and ridge boardwalk
  • 12:00–15:00  —  Red Cloud Golden Summit — cloud pouring through the gap (f/8, 1/125–1/500s)
  • 16:30–18:00  —  Descending cloud sea and ridge silhouettes

Day
7
Fanjingshan → Kaili

Fenghuang Mountain dawn & departure

One last dawn, this time at Fenghuang Mountain, whose summit gives a wide cloud-sea view over the Wuling range. It is a quiet, rarely visited platform — a good place to use everything you have picked up about exposure and layers over the last six days.

We return to Kaili for lunch and a final on-site edit session: back-up your cards, cull, rate and take a first pass on your strongest frames with your guide. Then the transfer to Kaili South station or Guiyang airport.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:40–07:00  —  Fenghuang Mountain cloud-sea dawn (ISO 200–400, f/8, 1/15–2s)
  • 09:30–11:30  —  On-site edit & review session: back-up, cull, first grade
  • 12:00  —  Lunch in Kaili
  • 14:00  —  Transfer to Kaili South station / Guiyang airport · Tour ends

Camera Settings Guide

Settings we use in Guizhou

Starting points for each light condition — your guide adjusts them on location and explains every change.

🌅
Village blue hour
ISO 800–3200 · f/1.8–2.8 · 1/30–1/60s

Drum-tower lanterns are warm but dim. Expose for the lamps, let the sky fall to indigo, and brace elbows for the slower frames.

☀
Terraces at dawn
ISO 200–400 · f/8 · 1/15–2s

Tripod and a graduated ND for the bright sky over dark paddies. Shoot the silver-grey mist version first, then wait for the sun to hit the ridge.

📷
Portraits & markets
ISO 400–800 · f/2.8–4 · 1/125–1/250s

Ask first, shoot second — your guide handles the introduction. Use a short telephoto for candid frames and let the background breathe.

💧
Waterfalls & long exposure
ISO 100 · f/11–16 · 1/4–2s

An ND8 or ND64 turns the falls and river into silk. Keep the shutter above 1/4s for texture in the falling water, longer for pure mist.
