Kunming → Dongchuan

Arrival & the Red Land at sunset

Your guide meets you at Kunming Changshui Airport or the high-speed station. A three-hour drive north-east takes us up onto the plateau to Dongchuan Red Land, where iron-rich soil turns every ploughed field into a band of rust, ochre and green.

We arrive with enough light left to work the Luoxiagou valley: long, sweeping side light across the terraced red fields with the late sun almost level. It is a landscape that rewards a telephoto — the patterns only appear when you compress the ridges together.

Dongchuan Red Land

Sunrise over the coloured fields

Dawn on the Red Land is the reason to come: low sun rakes across the ploughed rows and the colours saturate for about twenty minutes. We start at Jinxiuyuan for the classic wide view, then move to closer viewpoints as the light climbs.

Mid-morning we begin the long transfer south to Yuanyang, arriving in the late afternoon. Your guide watches the cloud base on the way — if it looks promising we stop for a second sunset on the road rather than pushing straight through.

Yuanyang · Duoyishu

Mirror terraces at dawn & Bada sunset

A 4:30 start puts us on the Duoyishu viewpoint before anyone else, looking down on terraces that hold water like a sheet of glass. As the sun comes up the paddies change from blue to copper to gold in about fifteen minutes — this is the single most photographed hour in Yunnan, and for good reason.

We rest through the middle of the day, when the light is flat and hard, and return to the terraces for the Bada sunset: a different angle, warmer light, and usually far fewer people. Your guide will move you between three viewpoints within walking distance depending on where the mist sits.

Yuanyang · Laohuzui

Tiger Mouth terraces & Hani village life

Laohuzui — Tiger Mouth — is the most dramatic of the Yuanyang viewpoints: a single hillside of terraces falling several hundred metres into cloud. At sunrise the mist sits in the bottom of the valley and the terraces appear to hang in mid-air.

The afternoon is for the people who built them. We photograph Hani villagers working the paddies, water buffalo on the bunds, and the mushroom-shaped thatched houses of the villages above the terraces — the human half of a landscape that is usually shot empty.

Yuanyang → Lijiang

Flight north & old town blue hour

An early departure and a flight (or a long scenic drive, depending on the season and your preference) bring us north-west to Lijiang at 2,400 m. The old town is a grid of canals, cobbles and Naxi timber houses that turns golden for about half an hour before the lamps come on.

We use that half hour on the roofs and bridges, then keep going into blue hour when the lanterns light the canals and the water doubles everything. Long exposures of 4–15 seconds smooth the crowds into nothing and leave the lantern trails intact.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Alpenglow on the 5,596 m summit

We are in position on the far side of the valley before sunrise, waiting for the moment the thirteen peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain catch fire. At 5,596 m the summit holds alpenglow for a good ten minutes after the valley below is still in shadow — a very reliable, very forgiving shot.

Later we move into Blue Moon Valley, where meltwater runs pale turquoise over limestone terraces, and finish with a second session back at the viewpoint if the cloud has broken. Bracket generously: this is the widest dynamic range of the trip.

Lijiang → Shangri-La

Songzanlin Monastery & the Tibetan plateau

A four-hour drive climbs onto the Tibetan plateau and into Shangri-La at 3,300 m. We take it slowly, with stops for the first views of the monastery and the high grasslands, because the altitude is as much a photographic consideration as a physical one.

Songzanlin is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan — white walls, gold roofs and a still reflecting pool in front. Golden hour turns the whole complex amber; afterwards we drive out to Napa Lake for the last light on the water and the grazing yaks.

Shangri-La · Departure

Monastery dawn, edit session & transfer

Before breakfast we return to the monastery shoreline for the dawn version: still water, first light on the gold roofs, and usually a handful of monks crossing the frame. It is a quieter, cooler image than the evening one and a good final frame for the trip.

Back at the hotel we run the closing edit-and-review session — back-up, cull, rating and a first grade on your strongest work. Then the transfer to Shangri-La airport, or the road back to Lijiang if you are flying from there.
