Day by Day

The itinerary, hour by hour

Every day is built around golden hour and blue hour. We shoot early, rest and back-up at midday, and chase the last light every evening.

Day
1
Wulingyuan

Arrival & Golden Whip Stream at blue hour

Your guide meets you at Hehua Airport or Zhangjiajie West station. A 40-minute transfer brings you to a guesthouse inside Wulingyuan, the gateway village — close enough that you lose no shooting time tomorrow morning.

The first session is an easy one among the pools and boulders of Golden Whip Stream. The sandstone walls close in above you and the water runs slow and dark; with a tripod and 5–10 second exposures it turns to mercury in the last of the light.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 15:00  —  Airport / station pick-up, check-in and gear check
  • 17:30–19:00  —  Golden Whip Stream in late light (ISO 100–400, f/11, 5–10s)
  • 20:00  —  Route briefing and weather check

Day
2
Yuanjiajie

Avatar pillars in sunrise mist

Up before the crowds and onto the first park bus to Yuanjiajie. The platforms here look straight out over the quartz-sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains of Avatar, and in the first hour the mist still sits between them.

We hold the main platform for the whole window, then walk to First Bridge Under Heaven and the Qiankun Pillar for tighter, more graphic frames. The afternoon is spent back in the forest, where the light is softer and the crowds have moved on.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:30  —  First shuttle to Yuanjiajie; on the platform by 06:15
  • 06:15–07:45  —  Avatar pillars in sunrise mist (ISO 200–400, f/8, 1/15–4s)
  • 09:00–11:30  —  First Bridge Under Heaven & Qiankun Pillar
  • 17:30–19:00  —  Second pillar session or forest detail

Day
3
Tianzi Mountain

Sea of clouds at dawn

Tianzi is the cloud-sea platform of the park: after a clear night the valleys fill and only the tallest towers break the surface. We take the first cable car up and stay through the whole window, because the cloud moves and rearranges the frame every few minutes.

In the afternoon we cross to Yangjiajie, the quiet sector most tour buses skip. Its “Natural Great Wall” of layered stone walls catches a strong side light late in the day, and on calm afternoons cloud pours over the ridge like a waterfall.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:40–07:30  —  Tianzi Mountain sea of clouds at sunrise (ISO 200–400, f/8, 1/15–4s)
  • 09:30–12:00  —  Ten-Mile Gallery and the lower platforms
  • 16:00–19:00  —  Yangjiajie Natural Great Wall at sunset (f/8–11)

Day
4
Tianmen Mountain

Light through the great arch

We catch the very first 7.5 km cable car from the city and ride it up through the cloud layers to the summit. From the top platform we frame Tianmen Cave — a 131.5-metre natural arch — as morning light pours through it.

The middle of the day is for the cliff-edge glass skywalk and the Guigu Plank Road, where the walkway appears to float above the abyss. At dusk we come back to the cave square for the vertical golden light beam between the rock walls.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:30  —  First cable car up Tianmen Mountain
  • 06:30–08:00  —  Tianmen Cave with morning light through the arch (ISO 100–400, f/8)
  • 10:00–14:00  —  Glass skywalk and Guigu Plank Road
  • 17:30–19:00  —  Cave square — vertical golden light beam (ultra-wide)

✦ Overnight: Zhangjiajie City

Day
5
Grand Canyon

Glass bridge at blue hour

A final dawn on the mountain for anyone who wants it, then the transfer to the Grand Canyon for the glass bridge that spans between two forested cliffs. We scout the angles while the light is flat so we are placed when it turns.

As the sun drops the transparent walkway begins to glow, and in blue hour the canyon fills with soft dusk haze while the bridge lights come on. It is the most modern frame of the trip and a clean way to close it. Then the edit session and your transfer out.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 06:00–07:15  —  Optional final mountain dawn
  • 10:00  —  Transfer to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon
  • 17:30–19:30  —  Glass bridge at golden hour and blue hour (ISO 400–1600, f/2.8–5.6)
  • Morning next day  —  Edit session and airport / station transfer

Camera Settings Guide

Settings we use in Zhangjiajie

Starting points for each light condition — your guide adjusts them on location and explains every change.

☀
Pillars in mist
ISO 200–400 · f/8 · 1/15–4s

Mist is your friend but it fools the meter — add a third of a stop. A polariser is usually too much here; it flattens the haze that gives the pillars their depth.

☁
Cloud sea at sunset
ISO 100–200 · f/8–11 · 1/125–1/250s

As the sun drops the cloud turns amber and the contrast rises fast. Shoot wide for the sweep, then a telephoto to compress the towers into layers.

🌅
Glass bridge blue hour
ISO 400–1600 · f/2.8–5.6 · 1/60s

The bridge lights come on quickly. Shoot a bracketed sequence across the transition and pick the frame where the sky and the walkway are balanced.

☀
Backlit light beams
ISO 100 · f/8 · 1/125s

For shafts of light through the canyon, expose for the bright sky and let the pillars fall toward black. Shoot in burst — the beams move.
