Day by Day

The itinerary, hour by hour

Every day is built around golden hour and blue hour. We shoot early, rest and back-up at midday, and chase the last light every evening.

Day
1
Xiapu · arrival

First mudflat sunset

Your guide meets you at Xiapu railway station or Fuzhou airport for the transfer to the coast. Xiapu is a working county, not a scenic park — the photographs come from the tidal flats, the bamboo poles and the people who farm the seaweed.

The first evening is a recce and a sunset: we pick a shoreline where the water still stands and the poles are already in place, and your guide explains how the tide table governs the whole itinerary. Times in this tour shift by up to two hours between days.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 15:00  —  Station / airport pick-up and hotel check-in
  • 17:30–19:00  —  First mudflat sunset — read the tide lines (ISO 100–200, f/8–11)
  • 20:00  —  Tide-table briefing and gear check

2
Beiqi & Yantian

Tidal grids at sunrise

A pre-dawn drive to Beiqi, where the mudflat is staked out in grids of bamboo poles that the tide turns into a graphic abstraction. From the hillside the whole bay reads as lines, dots and reflections — the image that made Xiapu famous.

After breakfast and a rest we return to the water for Yantian, where seaweed rafts and working boats sit in the shallows. Late afternoon is the best hour here: warm side light on the water, and the rafts' reflection doubling the pattern.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:20–07:15  —  Beiqi tidal grids at sunrise from the hillside (ISO 100–200, f/8–11, 1/30–2s)
  • 09:00–11:00  —  Shoreline detail: nets, shellfish workers and boat texture
  • 17:00–19:00  —  Yantian seaweed rafts in late light (ISO 100, f/8, polariser)

Day
3
Xiaohao & Shajiang

Mudflat graphics & bamboo S-curves

Xiaohao faces east, so it is a sunrise location: at low tide the exposed mud carries the footprints and channels of the people working on it, and the first light rakes across the texture. We shoot from the road above the flat with a telephoto.

Shajiang is the opposite — an evening location famous for its dense rows of bamboo poles that form S-curves through the water. The classic frame is from the hillside, compressed with a long lens so the poles stack into a single rhythmic pattern.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:30–07:15  —  Xiaohao mudflat at dawn — texture and channels (ISO 100–200, f/8–11)
  • 10:00–15:00  —  Rest, back-up and a midday edit session
  • 17:00–19:00  —  Shajiang bamboo S-curves at sunset (100–400mm, f/8–11)

Day
4
Dong'an & the banyan grove

Floating village & morning light through trees

Dong'an is a village of fish-farming platforms and wooden houses that floats entirely on the water. We go out in a small boat at dawn, working the channels between the houses while the light is soft and the village is waking up.

On the way back we stop at an old banyan grove where villagers bring cattle through the trees at dawn — the shafts of light through the canopy are the reason this spot has been photographed for thirty years. It is arranged, and it is worth it.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:40–07:30  —  Dong'an floating village by boat at dawn (ISO 200–400, f/4–5.6, 1/125–1/250s)
  • 08:00–09:30  —  Banyan grove: cattle and light shafts (ISO 400–800, f/2.8–4)
  • 17:00–19:00  —  Second tide-dependent session — flats or rafts

Xiapu · departure

Final sunrise reshoot & transfer

The last morning goes to whichever location delivered the best light earlier in the week — or to the one the weather robbed us of. Xiapu rewards a second visit: the tide will be at a different stage and the whole frame changes.

Back at the hotel we run the closing edit-and-review session — back-up, cull, rate and a first grade — then transfer you to Xiapu station or back to Fuzhou airport.

Today’s shooting schedule
  • 05:30–07:15  —  Final sunrise reshoot at the week's best location
  • 09:00–11:00  —  On-site edit & review session: back-up, cull, first grade
  • 12:00  —  Lunch and hotel check-out
  • 14:00  —  Transfer to Xiapu station / Fuzhou airport · Tour ends

☀
Tidal-flat sunrise
ISO 100–200 · f/8–11 · 1/30–2s

Arrive while it is still dark. The grid pattern only reads when the water is high enough to reflect — check the tide table before you pick your height.

📷
Graphic abstraction
ISO 100 · f/8–11 · 1/125s

A 100–400mm compresses hundreds of poles into a single pattern. Shoot from high, keep the horizon level, and let empty water carry two thirds of the frame.

📷
Working boats & nets
ISO 400–800 · f/4–5.6 · 1/250s

From a moving boat you need shutter speed before anything else. Continuous focus, burst mode, and a lens hood — the glare off the water is constant.

🌅
Fog & low contrast
ISO 200–400 · +1 EV

Coastal fog flattens everything. Add a stop of exposure compensation, shoot RAW, and let the softness do the work instead of fighting it.
