Chuandong River Waterfall Golden Hour

A curtain of white water spread across a whole cliff — wide, even and theatrical, with rainbows in the spray when the sun angle is right.

🌈 Rainbows 🌇 Golden Hour 🌊 Long Exposure
Morning

Rainbow hour — When sun clears the valley wall the spray throws rainbows right across the falls — aim mid-morning.

Golden Hour

Warm valley light — Low evening sun warms the rock face while the falls stay cool white — a natural colour contrast.

After Rain

Full curtain — The falls are widest within a couple of days of rain; the whole cliff pours.

The Location

A curtain of water you can walk behind

The Chuandong River Waterfall is one of Guizhou's most satisfying waterfalls to photograph precisely because of its shape. Rather than dropping in a single narrow ribbon, the river spreads across a wide, even rock face and falls as a broad curtain — tens of metres across, white and even, like stage scenery. The valley in front is open and green, the pool below is turquoise in clear weather, and a path lets you get close enough that the spray is part of the experience.

The two pictures to aim for are opposites. The first is fast and colourful: when the sun gets high enough, the mist hanging in front of the curtain catches the light and you get rainbows arcing across the falls — shoot them with the polariser backed off so the colour stays strong. The second is slow and quiet: in the late afternoon the valley goes into shade, and a one or two second exposure turns the curtain into soft, foggy silk against the dark rock, with the green pool stretched out in front.

What you'll capture

  • Rainbows arcing across the falling curtain
  • The full width of the falls in one wide frame
  • Silky long exposures against dark wet rock
  • The turquoise pool and green valley foreground
When to Come

Best season to shoot Chuandong River Waterfall

Spring

Mar-May. Full flow and the most frequent rainbows.

Summer

Jun-Aug. Biggest curtain and boldest spray; humid haze softens backgrounds.

Autumn

Sep-Nov. Clean air, golden valley light, reliable flow.

Winter

Dec-Feb. Lower water but quiet trails and crisp detail.

Gear & Technique

How to nail the shot

What to bring

  • Tripod and ND filter for 1-2s exposures
  • 16-35mm for the full width of the falls
  • Polariser — but ease it off when shooting rainbows
  • Rain cover and lens cloths for the spray
  • Waterproof boots or sandals for the wet path

Technique tips

  • Check the sun angle — rainbows appear for a limited mid-morning window
  • Expose for the white water; let wet rock go dark for contrast
  • Use a long shutter for silk, then a fast one to keep texture — shoot both
  • Foreground the pool and rocks to give the falls a stage
  • Walk both banks — the angle changes the falls completely
Suggested settings: f/11, ISO 100, 1-2s with ND for silk; 1/1000s handheld to freeze spray detail.
